إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ
“Indeed, your Lord is in observation.”
Saheeh International
Essence
One road runs through every life, and your Lord is at its watch-post, missing nothing, good or bad.
A reflection
'Where is your Lord?'
High in the mountains there is a pass with a single road through it. In summer, smugglers try the goat tracks, the ridges and the river beds. In winter, when snow closes everything else, there is only the road, and the post at the top of it. Every traveller who crosses that range passes the same small hut with its light on.
Someone once asked a desert Arab: where is your Lord? He answered with this ayah. At the watch-post.
Mirṣād is the place where a watcher waits on the road people must take. The lexicons agree on the root's single picture: making ready to watch for something on the path it has to travel. They picture a snake coiled by a path, waiting for whoever passes, and a lion crouching to spring. One lexicon adds that a mirṣād is a place set aside for watching and nothing else. The ayah, it says, is a warning that there is no refuge and no way round. The form of the word is like mīqāt, an appointed time: the mirṣād is an appointed place. The Arabs even used it simply to mean the road.
The commentators gave it several senses, and the major commentaries carry them side by side, because they fit together. He hears and sees. He watches the deeds of the children of Adam. The road of every servant runs past Him, and no one slips by. To Him is the return.
That is a hard truth for the ego. We are very good at planning routes. We plan how to avoid the difficult conversation, the audit, the consequence. The proud of this surah planned too: pillars, carved rock, pegs. Every route they built ended at the same post.
Why would Allah tell us this? Is He making Himself feared for His own glory? He needs nothing from us (35:15). The watch-post is not there for His sake. It is there because a world in which nothing is watched is a world where Pharaoh wins. For the one who is humble, it is not a threat. It means that nothing done on this road, good or bad, is lost.
The smugglers can choose their summer tracks. Winter comes to every range. There is only the road, and the light in the hut.
