Al-Jinn · Makki · ayah 26 of 28
Al-Jinn 72:26
عَـٰلِمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِۦٓ أَحَدًا
“[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone”
Saheeh International
Essence
The unseen is like the sun after it sets: still shining, only hidden from you, and its Knower lets no one stand over it.
A reflection
'His unseen': a possession, not a mystery
Look at the small word at the end of the ayah. Not 'the unseen', but ghaybihi, His unseen. The hidden is not a vague fog hanging over the universe. It is something He owns, as surely as He owns the visible.
One commentary notes that the definite article in al-ghayb sweeps in every unseen thing, small or great. And the possessive gives it an Owner. Everything you cannot see, He sees. Everything screened from you is open to Him.
Now set beside it a very modern hunger. We want to know. Read receipts. Location pins. Forecasts for the market and the weather and the election. A partner's messages. A rival's plans. The ego treats every closed door as an insult and every hidden thing as something it is owed.
The ayah gently returns the key to its Owner. 'With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them but He' (6:59). The urge to know everything is, at root, the urge to stand where only He stands.
Someone may object. Isn't a God who keeps secrets controlling? Why not reveal everything? But think what total knowledge would do to us. Knowing the day of our death, or the hour of every loss, or what each person thinks of us. Nobody could bear it. He needs nothing from our ignorance (35:15). The veil is for our sake.
And the very next ayah shows He is not stingy with what we need. He discloses to His chosen messengers whatever guidance requires. The rest He keeps, as a parent keeps the matches on the top shelf.
