Al-Fajr · Makki · ayah 16 of 30
Al-Fajr 89:16
وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ
“But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."”
Saheeh International
Essence
When provision is measured out tightly, he says 'my Lord has humiliated me', but Allah never says it; only the man does.
A reflection
The word Allah did not say
A self-employed plumber comes out of a customer's house to find his van gone, with every tool he owns inside it. It is the week the rent is due. Sitting on the kerb, he says to his brother on the phone: 'That's it. God's turned His back on me.'
Put this ayah beside the one before it. In the first, Allah Himself says fa-akramahu: He honoured him. In this one, He says only that He measured out his provision. He does not say 'and humiliated him'. The word ahānan, 'He has humiliated me', comes only from the man's mouth.
The classical commentators noticed the gap and drew the lesson. The man, one said, is truthful in the first claim and false in the second. He calls the narrowing of this world humiliation, and that is ignorance and a corrupt belief. So Allah does not repeat it.
Another gave an analogy from everyday life. If a friend brings you a gift, you say: he honoured me with a gift. If he brings none, you do not say he humiliated you. You simply received no gift that day. Not giving extra is not the same as insulting.
A third noticed something in the grammar. The first test is introduced with fa-, the second with wa-. The fa-, he said, points to how much more frequent the first kind is. Allah's mercy comes before His anger, and He tests with blessings far more than with pain. If you tried to count Allah's favours, you could not number them (14:34).
So on the kerb, the plumber's sentence is exactly the one the ayah refuses to confirm. His loss is real, and his grief is allowed. But the verdict he has reached is his, not his Lord's. He can take the same loss to Allah in different words: I am struggling, help me.
