Al-Fajr 89:24
يَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى
“He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."[1922]”
Saheeh International
Essence
His last words are a wish: if only I had sent something ahead for my life, the only life that turned out to be real.
A reflection
The hours that were actually life
A woman in her eighties sits with a box of old diaries. Whole years slide past her: appointments, shopping lists, a new kitchen, arguments she no longer remembers. Then a few days stand out as if lit from inside. The night she sat with a dying neighbour. The Ramadan she cooked every evening for a family who had just arrived with nothing. The morning her son said his first prayer beside her. She realises those few days are what she means by 'my life'.
Listen to the man's wish. He does not say 'for my next life' or 'for this life'. He says li-ḥayātī, for my life. One classical commentary hears a confession in that. It is as if the only life worth the name is the one that lasts. The Quran says it outright: the home of the Hereafter is truly life (29:64).
A later reflection goes further. True life, it says, is the life of the heart. A person's real lifespan is only the hours he lived with Allah. Everything spent turning away from Him is lost from his true age. That is what the man discovers on that Day: most of his years were not his life at all.
None of those living hours are for Allah's benefit. He needs nothing from us (35:15). Whoever strives, strives only for himself (29:6). The deeds are sent ahead li-ḥayātī: into the doer's own account, for the doer's own life.
Many people today feel their days vanish into screens and schedules, and wonder where their life went. The ayah answers gently. It went wherever it was sent.
The woman with the diaries still has time. So do you. Which hours this week will you still recognise, years from now, as your life?
