Al-Fajr · Makki · ayah 26 of 30
Al-Fajr 89:26
وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ
“And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].”
Saheeh International
Essence
None binds as He binds: the one who slipped every covenant meets the one knot he cannot slip.
A reflection
The knot you trust with your weight
At an indoor climbing wall, an instructor kneels beside a nervous beginner and checks her knot before she leaves the ground. He runs his thumb along each loop of the figure of eight. 'This is what you are trusting with your life,' he says. 'So it has to be right.' She climbs, and when she slips at the top, the knot holds.
The root of wathāq is exactly that, and the lexicons agree on it: tying a knot and making it firm. Wathāq itself is the rope or fetter that binds a captive. The Quran uses it only twice, here and for captives taken in battle (47:4). From the same root comes mīthāq, a covenant: a promise tied tight with an oath. The Quran uses that word twenty-five times, far more than every other form of the root put together. And thiqa, trust: resting your whole weight on someone.
Hold all three together and the ayah opens up. On that Day, none binds as He binds. One concise commentary adds: no one is able to bind as Allah binds, nor come anywhere near it.
The man this surah describes spent his life loosening every knot. He took the covenant with his Lord lightly. He let promises to the orphan and the poor slide. He trusted in nothing but money. Now he meets the one knot no one can loosen.
For the ego, this is humbling. We like to believe we can always wriggle free: renegotiate, explain, delay. Pharaoh bound others to stakes and imagined no one could bind him. The ayah answers: none binds as He binds.
Is it a boast? No. He needs nothing from us (35:15). It is the plain truth about power, and it has a tender side. The same root that gives the binding gives the trust. Allah's knots hold. Tie your life to Him and rest your weight on Him. When you slip at the top, His knot holds.
