“And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass?”
Saheeh International
Essence
The drumroll the Quran keeps for the Day of Judgement and the Night of Decree sounds again here, and it lands on freeing and feeding.
A reflection
The drumroll
At the end-of-year assembly, the head teacher builds up to the last prize. 'This is the most important award we give,' she says. The hall goes quiet. Parents lean forward, expecting the top exam results or the sports captain. She calls the name of a quiet eight-year-old. All year, she explains, this girl sat with the new boy at lunch so he would never eat alone.
The Quran has its own drumroll. Wa mā adrāka: 'And what will make you know?' Listen to where else it sounds. What will make you know what the Inevitable Hour is (69:3)? What the Day of Judgement is (82:17)? What the Night of Decree is, better than a thousand months (97:2)? What the pit of Fire is (101:10)?
The phrase is kept for the greatest things: the end of the world, the holiest night, the realities no one can picture. Commentators describe it as a way of magnifying what comes next.
Then, in this surah, the same drumroll sounds. What will make you know what the steep pass is? And the answer is not a vision of the unseen. It is freeing a neck. Feeding someone on a day of hunger. An orphan in the family. A poor man in the dust.
That is a quiet shock to a common assumption: that the truly grand parts of religion are the rituals and the dramatic moments. Worship does include those. But the Quran uses the same language of awe for a meal handed over on a hard day.
One commentator puts the effect simply. This is the Quran magnifying the commitment to living the religion. What looks ordinary is being lifted to the level of the Night of Decree.
The parents in the school hall were surprised. So were the first hearers of this surah. They expected the drumroll to end in something spectacular. It ended in kindness that costs something. The surprise is the lesson.
