لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ
“We have certainly created man into hardship.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Everything sworn so far arrives at one plain truth: struggle is not a fault in your life, but the room you were created in.
A reflection
Created inside the struggle
A man in his forties, fit and successful, wakes one Tuesday with a slipped disc. He cannot put on his own socks. His diary is full of meetings he planned to lead. His body has cancelled them without asking.
This ayah is the answer to three oaths, and it arrives with triple force. There is the oath, then the la- of emphasis, then qad, 'certainly'. All of that, to deliver one sentence. 'We have created the human being in kabad': in toil, strain and hardship.
Notice who speaks. 'We created.' The terms of human life were set before any of us arrived. We did not choose to be born into bodies that tire, hearts that ache, and livelihoods that must be earned. The little word fī, 'in', matters too. One commentator notes that it pictures toil surrounding a person the way a container holds what is in it.
The ego does not like this. It prefers the story that we are in control, that hardship is a temporary glitch, and that a strong enough person rises above it. An early scholar answered that pride bluntly. No creature endures what the son of Ādam endures, he said, and yet he is the weakest of creatures.
Another classical note turns the point into an argument. Had the matter been up to the human being, he would never have chosen these hardships. So he has a Creator who arranged his life and decreed these conditions for him. Let him, then, follow that Creator's command.
Someone may ask whether it is arrogant for God to announce that He made us, and made us to struggle. But this is not self-praise. It is the truth told plainly to creatures who keep forgetting it. Allah is free of all need (35:15). He gains nothing from our humility. We gain everything. The one who accepts that life is kabad stops being ambushed by it.
The man with the slipped disc will be back on his feet. He may also be a little humbler. That is not a small gift.
