Al-Ghashiyah 88:8

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ

“[Other] faces, that Day, will show pleasure.”

Saheeh International

Essence

On the same Day, other faces are soft, the weathering of a hard life smoothed away, with the bliss plain to read in them.

A reflection

A face the weather has left

Picture a scientist coming home after a winter at a polar research station. At the airport her lips are cracked, her cheeks raw, her eyes narrowed from months of wind and glare. Her family barely recognise her. Two weeks later, at her mother's table, the same face has softened. The weather has left it. You can see the ease in it before she says a word.

Nāʿima is that softness. One commentator explains that the word may come from nuʿūma, softness, used for a face radiant and pleasing to look at. The Quran describes the same faces elsewhere: you will recognise in their faces the radiance of bliss (83:24). Or it may come from naʿīm, bliss itself: faces living in comfort. Either way, the joy is not hidden inside. It shows.

The early commentators add where the softness comes from. It is bliss that Allah Himself has given them in His gardens, says one. Another says they grew soft at seeing how their affair and their good deeds turned out. A third says the bliss can be recognised in them, and they reached it through their striving, which the next ayah names.

Notice what this implies about the life before. Faces are softened because something hardened them. The sun of long days, the wind of hard years, worry carved between the eyebrows, the tight jaw of patience held for a long time. None of that was wasted. It is simply over.

For anyone whose face has been weathered by a hard stretch, this ayah is a quiet promise. The lines are not permanent. There is a Day when they are smoothed, not by forgetting what happened, but by seeing where it led.
