Ash-Shams 91:10

وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَا

“And he has failed who instills it [with corruption].”

Saheeh International

Essence

The one who fails is the one who buries his own soul, pushing it out of sight until its fire never catches.

A reflection

Fire in the flint, never struck

A classical writer, explaining this passage, reaches for an image from every Arab household. Allah, he says, prepared the human being to receive perfection. He placed in him the readiness for it, hidden, like fire in a flint. Then He inspired him, enabled him, taught him, sent messengers and revealed books. All of it was to draw that hidden fire out into flame.

Now look at the word for failure in this ayah. Khāba has its own picture. Its root image is the khiyāb, the fire-stick that will not strike a spark. You strike it and strike it, and nothing catches. The lexicons add that khayba comes only after hope. It is hope cut off.

Put the two images side by side. The fire is in the flint. The one who fails is not someone with nothing inside. He is someone with fire inside who never let it catch.

Picture a box of good oil paints, bought at twenty by someone who loved to draw. The tubes are still sealed at fifty. He meant to start. There was always a reason: work, children, the feeling of not being good enough yet. Nothing was taken from him. Nothing was ever lit.

That is the quiet tragedy this ayah names. Not wickedness in a dramatic sense, but a soul pushed down and left unkindled. Readiness placed by Allah, and then buried under distraction, sin and delay.

The mercy is that the flint is still there. As long as you are breathing, it can be struck. A prayer on time, an apology made, a good deed begun today: each is a strike. Keep striking. The One who placed the fire is the One who makes it catch.
