Ash-Shams 91:1
وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَا
“By the sun and its brightness”
Saheeh International
Essence
The surah's first witness is the sun at the height of its morning reign: the greatest light we see, and already moving on.
A reflection
Nobody holds noon
Ḍuḥā is the sun climbed high, its light spread over the land. One classical explanation puts it in political language: when it shines and its reign is established. By mid-morning the sun rules the sky. Nothing outshines it, and nobody can look it in the face.
Yet the Arabs graded that reign like a clock. The first climb of the morning was ḍaḥwa. A little higher was ḍuḥā. When the day stretched towards noon it became ḍaḥāʾ. The word for the sun's power is a word for stages, and every stage passes. At the very moment its rule is complete, it is already on its way down.
Picture a song that sits at number one for a week. Every radio station plays it on the hour. Strangers hum it at the bus stop. Nine days later another song holds the top spot, and the first is on its way to becoming a quiz question.
Human pride dreams of a forenoon that never ends. The promotion, the full diary, the season when everyone returns our calls: we treat these as a new permanent state. The sun, the greatest power we can see, has never once tried to stay at its height. It climbs as far as it is sent and then goes.
Someone may ask why Allah swears by His own handiwork. Does He want it admired? A classical answer is that He names, in His oaths, creations full of benefit. What He swears by lands in the heart, so the listener pauses, reflects and gives thanks. The pausing is ours to gain. 'If you disbelieve, you and everyone on earth, Allah is Free of need, Praiseworthy' (14:8).
So the oath is aimed at the ego, gently. The One who hands the sun its morning, and takes it back each day, hands you yours too. Enjoy the light while it is high. Do not mistake it for something you own.
