Al-A'la 87:14

قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ

“He has certainly succeeded who purifies himself”

Saheeh International

Essence

Success is not getting on top; it is the patient work of cleaning and growing your own soul, for your own sake.

A reflection

The one room nobody filters

A man has an air purifier in every room of his flat. The filters are changed on schedule, and a small screen shows the air quality in green. He has not spoken to his brother in three years, and the reason still sits in his chest like smoke.

We are good at cleaning what we can see. Kitchens, cars, inboxes, skin. Many of us sense that something inside needs the same care, and we are not sure where to begin. The ayah names it plainly: qad aflaḥa man tazakkā. Successful, truly, is the one who purifies himself.

The first thing to notice is who benefits. Allah gains nothing from your purity. Another ayah says so directly: whoever purifies himself purifies himself only for his own good (35:18). And another: O people, you are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Free of all need (35:15). The command is not a service you do for Him. It is a service He shows you how to do for yourself.

The Prophet ﷺ described every day as a trade with your own soul. Sahih Muslim reports his words: all people go out in the morning and sell themselves. One sets his soul free, and another ruins it. You do not get to skip the market. You only choose what you come home with.

What is being cleaned? The commentaries give a wide answer. Freeing the heart from associating partners with Allah. Cleansing the character of what is base. Keeping deeds clear of showing off. Giving what is owed from one's wealth. The word is broad enough to hold all of them.

And the reward is stated before any effort is described. Qad makes it certain: he has succeeded. That is the kindest part. The success begins with the turning, not with the finished result.

So add one room to the list. Tonight, before sleep, open the window on your own heart for a minute. What came in today that should not stay? Ask Allah to clear it. The air in the flat is already green. The air in you can be too.
