Essence

When one task is done, do not collapse into nothing: empty yourself of it, then stand up for your Lord.

A reflection

The surah does not stop at comfort

Most of us stop reading this surah at 94:6. It is the line we came for. We take the comfort and close the page.

The surah does not stop there. Two more ayat follow, and they are commands. Fa-idhā faraghta fa-nṣab: so when you are finished, stand and toil.

Look at the whole shape. Four ayat look back: did We not open, set down, raise. Two ayat promise: with the hardship, ease. Two ayat command: stand, and turn to your Lord. Past, promise, command. The commentaries name the logic. Allah has counted His past blessings and promised more. So He urges His Messenger ﷺ to gratitude and to effort in worship, joining one act of devotion to the next.

Hear what that meant to the first listener. He was a man in hardship in Makka, freshly comforted. The comfort did not end in rest. It ended in a task. The relief was given so that he could stand up again.

Picture a father who prayed every prayer on a hospital corridor floor for the nine days his son was in intensive care. The boy came home. A month later, the prayer mat is back in the cupboard. The comfort arrived, and the conversation stopped.

The surah's shape asks for the opposite. When ease comes, it is not the end of the story. It is the moment the next standing begins.
