Al-Kawthar · Makki · ayah 2 of 3

Al-Kawthar 108:2

فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنْحَرْ

“So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice [to Him alone].”

Saheeh International

Essence

The answer to overflowing good is not a speech of thanks but a turned life: prayer for your Lord alone, and sacrifice that feeds others.

A reflection

The two halves of worship

Read the surah just before this one. Al-Māʿūn describes people who push the orphan away, who are careless about their prayer, who pray to be seen, and who withhold even small kindnesses. Now read this surah against it, phrase by phrase, as one classical commentator does.

Against meanness: 'We have given you abundance', so give abundantly yourself. Against careless prayer: fa-ṣalli, pray, and keep praying. Against praying to be seen: li-rabbika, for your Lord, not for an audience. Against withholding: wa-nḥar, sacrifice, with the meat going to those in need. Each line answers a fault.

The same commentator draws a larger lesson. The prayer is reverence for Allah's command. The sacrifice is compassion for His creation. Every form of servanthood comes back to these two.

Another early scholar adds that the command cannot be only about one festival morning. The gift was an overflowing abundance. It would be strange if the whole return for it were one prayer and one animal a year. The return is a whole life of both.

So worship is not only the prayer mat. Picture the man who never misses the front row of the mosque, yet has not knocked on his lonely neighbour's door in years. He has one half. Picture the woman who cooks for every new mother on her street, and still finds her prayer rushed. She has the other half.

This ayah asks for both, joined by a single wa: and. It is a quiet test to run on any week. Which half grew thinner? Which half needs feeding next?
