Al-Qari'ah 101:2

مَا ٱلْقَارِعَةُ

“What is the Striking Calamity?”

Saheeh International

Essence

The name returns as a question, the way words fail anyone who has seen something too large for a sentence.

A reflection

When the describer gives up

A man comes home from a winter trip to the far north, where he saw the northern lights for the first time. Over dinner his sister asks what they were like. He starts, stops, and starts again. 'What were they like…' he repeats, half to himself. Then he holds out his phone. The photo is a green smudge over a dark field. 'It's nothing like this,' he says, and gives up.

Everyone has met that moment. Some things are too large for the sentence you have ready. The honest response is to repeat the question and let it hang.

That is the grammar of this ayah. Mā al-qāriʿa: what is the Striker? It is not a request for information. The early explanations call it a question of magnifying and of alarm: what a thing it is, how vast, how terrible. One classical scholar explains why Arabic reaches for a question here. When people want to show that a thing cannot be encompassed by description, they speak of it as if asking about something whose true nature is unknown. The question is an admission that words fall short.

Notice who is making that admission. The speaker is not a traveller fumbling for adjectives. It is Allah, who knows that Day completely. He chooses to speak of it in the form we use when description fails. That choice is for our sake. It tells us, before a single picture is given, that whatever we are about to imagine will be too small.

There is a quiet discipline in this for the reader. We live among confident summaries: every event explained in a headline, every mystery reduced to a list of ten points. This ayah refuses to summarise. It makes you sit for a moment inside a question with no quick answer.

Read the first two ayat aloud and then stop. Do not hurry to the next line. Let the question do its work: loosen your grip on the small picture you already had.
