Al-Humazah 104:7

ٱلَّتِى تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى ٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةِ

“Which mounts directed at the hearts.[1989]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Fire does not stop at the skin; it rises to the heart, where the contempt was first felt and the love of money settled.

A reflection

It goes where it started

Why the hearts? Two explanations sit side by side in the classical commentaries. The heart is the tenderest part of the body, pained by the slightest harm. And the heart is where false beliefs, bad intentions and ugly traits live: the place evil deeds start.

The second is worth sitting with. The eye-roll of the first ayah began as a feeling. The hoarding began as a love of money that took over the heart. One commentary traces the match directly. The gathering of wealth grew from love of it taking hold of the heart. So the Fire answers by rising over the hearts. The tongue did the damage, but it was only the messenger.

In the meeting you smiled; inside, you were ranking. At the family lunch you said congratulations; inside, you were counting their house against yours. No one saw it. The heart did.

Sahih Muslim records a saying of the Prophet ﷺ that joins this surah's two themes. Allah does not look at your appearance or your wealth. He looks at your hearts and your deeds. The man of this surah had put all his value in the two things Allah does not look at.

Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim also report that in the body there is a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound; if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. It is the heart. This ayah is the other side of that teaching.

The Fire does not bother with the messengers. It goes straight to headquarters. So the work of avoiding it must start there too. Not only guarding the tongue and opening the hand, but tending what drives them both.
