إِۦلَـٰفِهِمْ رِحْلَةَ ٱلشِّتَآءِ وَٱلصَّيْفِ

“Their accustomed security [in] the caravan of winter and summer[1997] -”

Saheeh International

Essence

A warm road for winter and a cool road for summer: Allah counts even a trade route among His gifts.

A reflection

The supply chain as a gift

Some imagine faith and business belong in separate rooms: prayer is holy, trade is merely worldly. This ayah does not agree.

Makkah sat in a valley with no crops and no herds. Everything it ate had to be carried in. So Quraysh travelled twice a year: in winter south to Yemen, which is warm, and in summer north to Syria, which is cool. They came home with grain, cloth and profit. The Quran names this trade route as a gift. Not a pilgrimage, not a prayer: a business trip.

One classical commentator calls it among the greatest of blessings. A people had a warm place for the cold months and a cool one for the hot months. Another notes a quiet detail. The ayah says riḥla, journey, in the singular, though two are meant. The meaning was so clear that one word could carry both.

The concise commentary adds the purpose behind the trade. The two journeys let Quraysh afford to stay in Makkah and serve the House, which was their pride. The market paid for the sanctuary. Commerce was not the opposite of devotion; it held it up.

Walk through a supermarket in January and see fruit and rice from three continents. Someone planted, picked, shipped and stacked them, and they reached you safely. We call it logistics. This ayah calls it īlāf, a routine Allah made easy.

That changes how a working life can be lived. Your commute, your deliveries, your invoices and your pay are part of the same story. They can be received as gifts and carried out as trusts. The honest trader, the fair employer and the careful driver are all standing inside this ayah.

The danger is not trade. It is forgetting who opened the road. The next two ayat will draw that line clearly: enjoy the journeys, and worship the Lord of this House.
