Essence
Before it asks anything of you, the surah asks you to marvel at what you stopped noticing: a safe, settled routine.
A reflection
The miracle nobody noticed
The surah before ended with a miracle: birds, stones, an army turned to straw. This surah begins with the opposite: a habit. Īlāf is what you have grown used to, what has become familiar. Many read the opening li- as a call to wonder. One modern commentary spells it out. Marvel at the familiarity of Quraysh, their safety, the soundness of their affairs, the smooth running of their two journeys.
The Arabs had a word for the grey doves of Makkah: awālif, the ones grown so used to the place that they never leave. Quraysh lived like those doves. Safety had become the air they breathed, and nobody notices air.
It is a strange thing to marvel at. Yet the dramatic rescue happened once. The routine it protected happened every year: caravans leaving and coming home, markets full, families fed. The miracle was the exception. The ordinary was the gift.
We do the same. We thank Allah loudly for the one test result that came back clear, and never for the years of health before it. The tap runs, the lights come on, the bus arrives, the children walk in from school. Familiarity is the most efficient eraser of gratitude there is.
There is a reason the mind works this way. What is constant fades from attention, so that we can notice change. It is useful for survival and disastrous for thankfulness. The very blessings that hold up our lives become invisible precisely because they never fail.
This ayah turns that habit back into wonder. It takes the most ordinary thing in Quraysh's life and holds it up as if it were the elephant story itself. Look at what you are used to, it says, and see that Someone keeps it running.
The practice it invites is simple. Once a day, pick one thing that has never failed you, and look at it as if it were new.
