Al-Baqarah · Madani · ayah 197 of 286

Al-Baqarah 2:197

“Ḥajj is [during] well-known months,[75] so whoever has made ḥajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of iḥrām], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during ḥajj. And whatever good you do - Allāh knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allāh. And fear Me, O you of understanding.”

Essence

On the pilgrimage keep your tongue and temper; every unseen good is known to Allah, and the best provision is mindfulness of Him.

A reflection

Known, in a crowd of millions

At the pillars of Minā, a young man spends twenty minutes with his arms around an old woman, shielding her from the crush. Then the crowd moves and she is gone. He never learns her name. No one filmed it.

'Whatever good you do, Allah knows it'. The sentence is placed in the middle of the pilgrimage, where millions move together and no one can see more than a few faces. In that ocean of people, every act is invisible to almost everyone. To One it is not.

This is a quiet majesty. Allah does not say 'He will reward it', though He will. He says 'He knows it'. For the ego that lives on being noticed, the line is a cure. You do not need the crowd to see. The One whose knowledge takes in every pilgrim at once has already seen.

Then the ayah changes voice. 'And be mindful of Me'. Not 'of Allah', but 'of Me': the speaker turns and addresses the listener directly. A rhetorician explains the closing phrase: true understanding requires mindfulness of Allah. Whoever has a mind and does not fear Him is as if he had none.

Does He need our good deeds noticed and counted? No. He is free of all need (35:15). His knowing is not for His benefit. It is what frees us from the endless work of being seen.

The young man went home without a story to tell. He did not need one. The good had already been received.
