لَآ أَعْبُدُ مَا تَعْبُدُونَ
“I do not worship what you worship.”

Essence
Everyone bows to something, a salary, a screen, other people's verdict, and this short line is the first sentence of refusing them all.
A reflection
What do you actually worship?
Many people today say, quite sincerely, that they do not worship anything. They picture worship as a prayer mat, a hymn, a ritual they no longer do.
But the word here is bigger. ʿIbāda is the fullest love joined to the deepest yielding: what you adore, fear to lose, and obey without arguing. Love alone is not worship, and submission alone is not worship. You worship what you both love completely and bow to completely. By that measure, everyone worships something.
Try it on an ordinary week. The inbox you answer at eleven at night because you cannot bear not to. The number on the scale that decides your mood before breakfast. The parent whose approval still steers choices at forty. The follower count, the bonus, the image in other people's eyes. None of them is called a god. Yet each can take the love, the fear and the obedience that worship means.
In Makkah the things worshipped were carved and set up in the open. Their owners could point to them. Ours are harder to see, and they sit on the phone in our pocket. That makes them more dangerous, not less, because what is never named is never refused.
Lā aʿbudu mā taʿbudūn: I do not worship what you worship. The commentaries note the tense. It is a refusal made now, and one early reading hears it reaching into the future too: not now, and not later.
It is renewed every time the old masters call. The first step of that refusal is simply honesty. Sit down and name, privately, what has been taking the love, fear and obedience that belong to Allah alone.
