Essence

The gentlest man in Makkah was handed a hard sentence with one extra word, Say: it came from above, not from temper.

A reflection

The offer on the table

Picture the meeting. The leaders of Makkah come with a deal, as the commentaries report it. Wealth enough to make him the richest man in the city. Marriage to whomever he chooses. Their loyalty behind him. All he has to do is stop speaking against their gods.

If that is too much, there is a gentler compromise: you worship our gods for a year, and we worship yours for a year. Another version names the men who proposed it and adds their reasoning. Let us share our whole affair, they said. If what you brought is better, we will have taken our share of it. If what we have is better, you will have taken yours. A third version asks for less still. Just touch one of our idols, and we will believe you.

It sounds reasonable. Most of us have heard its modern cousins. Sign off on these figures and the promotion is yours. Keep quiet about the shortcut and you stay in the circle. Split the difference and everyone wins.

The reports say he refused the core of it at once: God forbid that I should set up partners with Him. Pressed for something smaller, he did not improvise. He waited for what would come from his Lord.

What came began with one word: qul, Say. Then, the next morning, he went to the Sacred Mosque, where the chiefs of Quraysh sat together. He stood over them and recited the whole surah to the end. The reports say they gave up hope of him from that day, and turned to harming him and his companions.

That last detail matters. The clear answer had a cost. It ended the negotiation, and it began a harder season. Some offers cannot be half accepted. They are answered once, clearly, in full view, and the price is paid in the open. One chain for these reports is noted as weak, but they are widely told, and the surah itself is their plainest witness.
