Ash-Shu'ara 26:22

وَتِلْكَ نِعْمَةٌ تَمُنُّهَا عَلَىَّ أَنْ عَبَّدتَّ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

“And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"”

Saheeh International

Essence

Pharaoh counts raising one boy as a favour; Musa points out that the favour grew from enslaving his whole people.

A reflection

The favour that only existed because of the crime

Trace how Musa came to be in Pharaoh's palace at all. Pharaoh had enslaved the Children of Israel and was killing their newborn sons. A terrified mother put her baby in a basket on the river. The basket drifted to the palace, and the boy was raised there. Every step of the 'favour' Pharaoh now boasts of began with his own crime.

One commentator puts it sharply. Musa refused to call Pharaoh's favour anything but a calamity. The real content of that kindness, if you trace it, was the enslavement of his people. Another explains the link plainly: had you not enslaved us and killed our sons, my own family would have raised me. I would never have needed your nursery.

The ayah's grammar carries this. 'That' is left vague for a moment, a 'that' whose ugliness only appears when it is explained. Then comes the explanation: an ʿabbadta banī isrāʾīl, 'that you enslaved the Children of Israel'. The favour and the crime turn out to be one thing seen from two sides.

Picture a factory whose chimneys have fouled a valley's air for thirty years. The owner opens a gleaming clinic in the village, with his name over the door. At the opening, he reminds the villagers how much they owe him. An old man with a rasping cough stands up. 'Your clinic treats the lungs your chimneys ruined. Is that the gift you want thanks for?'

This is a lens worth carrying into life. Some kindnesses are real and freely given. Others are only the visible tip of an injustice, offered to buy silence. Before you are told to be grateful, it is fair to ask what made the gift necessary.

And turn the question on yourself. When you remind someone of what you did for them, ask honestly: did I also cause the need I am now proud of meeting? A parent, a manager, a community leader can all fall into Pharaoh's accounting without noticing.
