Yusuf 12:100
“And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration.[618] And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle[619] in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise.”

Essence
The dream comes true, and Yusuf names the One behind it: subtle, working by ways too fine to be felt, knowing, wise.
A reflection
So fine it slips in unfelt
At the climax of his life, Yusuf reaches for one name of Allah above all others. My Lord is Laṭīf in what He wills.
The lexicons give the root two strands at once. One is fineness: the opposite of thick, a movement too light to register, a thing the senses cannot catch at all. The other is gentleness: to press a thing close to your side rather than hold it away. A mother is laṭīfa with her child.
A classical spiritual writer draws out what the name meant in this ayah. He brings about what He wills by hidden ways that people do not know. The name holds His knowledge of the finest details, and His conveying of mercy by paths no one can see. And then he lists Yusuf's life. Separation from his father. The pit. Sale as a slave. Seduction, a lie, prison. Outwardly, trials and calamities. Inwardly, blessings and openings that Allah made the cause of his happiness in this world and the next.
A theological commentary adds the scale of it. A family reunited, with love and ease of heart, was as far from possible as anything could be. But He is subtle. When He wills a thing, He eases its causes, however far away it lies.
This is where the ego shrinks. We insist on seeing the route. We want the plan explained before we trust it. The name Laṭīf says the route was there all along, too fine to be felt, pressed close beside us. Nothing in it needed our approval.
Nor does He need our praise of it. The name is for us. It tells a person in the pit what is happening, unfelt, at that very moment.
