Yusuf · Makki · ayah 6 of 111

Yusuf 12:6

“And thus will your Lord choose you and teach you the interpretation of narratives [i.e., events or dreams] and complete His favor upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He completed it upon your fathers before, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord is Knowing and Wise."”

Essence

Ya'qub reads the dream back to his son: you will be gathered in, taught and favoured, by a Lord who knows where favour belongs.

A reflection

Gathered in, not self-made

The word for 'choose' here is ijtabā, and its root is water. The Arabs said jabā when they drew water into a trough and held it there. The trough itself was a jābiya. One lexicon defines the Qur'an's form as gathering by way of choosing out: not sweeping everything in, but drawing in the one thing picked.

So the greatest thing said about Yusuf in his youth is not that he will achieve. It is that he will be gathered. One commentary describes this choosing as a singling out with gifts that come without the servant's own striving.

That sits badly with the modern ego, which loves to be self-made. A man posts online: how I built my company from nothing. Forty thousand people like it. His wife, who paid the mortgage alone for the first six years, scrolls past it in bed. Pride edits out the trough.

Ya'qub's account leaves no room for that edit. Your Lord will choose you. Your Lord will teach you. He will complete His favour on you. Every verb belongs to Him. Yusuf's later wisdom and rule are real, but they begin as water drawn in by another hand.

Then the ayah closes on why: your Lord is Knowing, Wise. He knows, one commentary says, where favour belongs and who is fit to be chosen. He is Wise in how He manages His creation.

Is that self-praise? Here a father is saying it to comfort a frightened boy. And Allah gains nothing from being called Knowing; the boy gains everything from knowing it. The humble do not need to be the source of their own worth. They only need to know Who chose them, and that He chose well.
