Yusuf 12:103

وَمَآ أَكْثَرُ ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَوْ حَرَصْتَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ

“And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Most people will not believe, however hard you long for it: not a verdict for the proud, but comfort for the one who longed.

A reflection

Spoken to a grieving caller, not a proud few

This ayah is often quoted with a certain satisfaction. Most people will not believe. It can sound like a verdict on everyone else, delivered to a confident minority who already know they are right.

Read in its place, it is nothing of the kind. It is spoken to one man, and it is meant to comfort him.

Two commentaries preserve a report about its setting. People of Quraysh, and some of the Jews, asked the Prophet ﷺ about the story of Yusuf. It was revealed in full, and he hoped that hearing it would bring them to faith. One version says they had even promised to believe. They did not. He grieved, and this ayah came to console him. It is a report, not a graded narration, but the commentaries agree on the tone.

A concise commentary gives the sense: they will not believe you or follow you, however much you long for it, so do not grieve. Another paraphrases a related ayah: do not let your soul go out in regrets over them.

So the person this ayah addresses is not smug. He is heartbroken. He has just told the most beautiful story ever revealed, perfectly, to people who asked for it, and watched them turn away.

Anyone who reads this ayah to feel superior has read it from the wrong side. It belongs to the teacher whose best lesson fell flat, the parent whose child walked out, the caller whose call was refused. It tells them: the refusal is not a measure of your failure.
