Yusuf 12:106
وَمَا يُؤْمِنُ أَكْثَرُهُم بِٱللَّهِ إِلَّا وَهُم مُّشْرِكُونَ
“And most of them believe not in Allāh except while they associate others with Him.”

Essence
Most people believe in Allah, yet that belief carries a partner, like a pilgrim's cry that will not stop at no partner for You.
A reflection
The most independent of partners
Why does it matter so much to Allah that nothing shares in His worship? A sceptic might ask whether this is a kind of jealousy, a ruler insisting on exclusive praise.
Two sahih reports answer from two sides.
The first is about justice. A Companion asked the Prophet ﷺ which sin is greatest. He said: that you set up a rival to Allah, when He created you (Bukhari 4477). The wrong is not that Allah is denied something. It is that the truth is turned upside down. The One who made you is ranked alongside things He made. Another surah calls it a tremendous wrong (31:13).
The second is about need. Allah says, in a report the Prophet ﷺ relayed: I am the most independent of partners from partnership. Whoever does a deed in which he associates another with Me, I leave him and his partnership (Muslim 7475).
There is no grasping in that. A partner who needs a share fights for it. Allah simply steps back from the shared deed. He does not need it. The one who split it is left holding both halves, and neither is worth anything.
That is where the ego comes in. The most common partner is not a stone idol. It is the self. Pride wants a share of the credit. Self-importance wants the deed to be seen. The need for praise quietly takes a cut of every act of worship.
Allah is not diminished by any of this. It is the worshipper who is made smaller.
