Ar-Ra'd 13:21

“And those who join that which Allāh has ordered to be joined[637] and fear their Lord and are afraid of the evil of [their] account,”

Saheeh International

Essence

They join what Allah ordered joined and dread a strict account: the list of ties is His, the ledger theirs to check first.

A reflection

His list of ties, not ours

Read the wording slowly. It does not say 'those who keep in touch with family'. It says those who join what Allah has ordered to be joined. The verb is passive, and the object is open: mā, whatever. The list is His.

That matters, because most of us already join a great deal. We join what is pleasant and what is useful. Picture a man who keeps every useful relative warm. He never misses the Eid open house of the uncle with the solicitor's practice. He answers the cousin on the council within the hour. His great-uncle, who repairs watches in a spare bedroom, has not had a visit in four years. None of it feels like cutting. It feels like being busy.

The ayah takes the choosing away. Most commentators say the first meaning is the ties of the womb, one's kin. Several add that the open wording reaches further. It covers believing in every prophet without dividing them, and joining faith to deeds. It covers the bond between believers, and the rights of neighbours, travelling companions and those who serve you.

One classical commentator raises an obvious question. The ayah before already praised those who keep Allah's covenant (13:20), which covers every command. Why name joining separately? So that nobody imagines religion is only a matter between himself and Allah. What lies between him and people was given its own line.

Two commentaries carry it to the edge of the farmyard. An early ascetic in Makkah asked some visitors where they were from. Khurasan, they said. Fear Allah, he replied, and be from wherever you like. If a servant did every kind of good, then mistreated a hen he owned, he would not be counted among those who do good.

The hen is the point. Joining is not measured by the relatives who can return a favour. It is measured at the weakest link within your reach: the great-uncle with his watches, the hen in the yard. Allah has already written the list. Our work is to stop editing it.
