Al-Isra 17:108

وَيَقُولُونَ سُبْحَـٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِن كَانَ وَعْدُ رَبِّنَا لَمَفْعُولًا

“And they say, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Face to the ground, they clear their Lord of every flaw and say it aloud: our Lord's promise was always going to be fulfilled.

A reflection

A promise that outlived its first hearers

A man stands at his father's hospital bed and promises to finish the extension they started together. By next summer, Dad, he says. I promise. His father dies that week. Twelve years later the breeze blocks are still stacked by the shed, green with moss. The son is not a liar. Life came, money went, the summers filled. Human promises bend under circumstance, even sincere ones.

Now hear what the people of this ayah say, foreheads on the ground. Subḥāna rabbinā in kāna waʿdu rabbinā la-mafʿūlā: glory be to our Lord; the promise of our Lord was indeed bound to be done.

Several commentaries explain which promise they meant. Their own scriptures had foretold a prophet and a revelation. They had been waiting for it to be fulfilled. Then the Quran was recited to them, and they recognised the thing promised. One commentary says their subḥān clears their Lord of ever breaking a promise. Another says they glorify Him in awe at His keeping what He had foretold.

Set that beside our own record, and the ego has little room. We promise for next week and miss. We say 'definitely' and mean 'probably'. A promise of ours that survives twelve years is rare enough to tell stories about. His promise crossed the generations and arrived exactly.

The grammar carries the certainty. In kāna here is the emphatic form, one commentary notes: truly, it was so. Mafʿūl means done, carried out. The promise is spoken of as a completed deed.

Is it vain for Allah to be glorified for keeping His word? We praise the rare person who keeps every promise. Nobody calls him vain for being praised, and he did not ask for it. The praise is simply the honest response of the one who was promised. Allah gains nothing from our tasbīḥ. We gain an accurate picture of whom we are dealing with.

That picture is the point. If His promise of a prophet was kept across generations, His other promises are safe too. The moss on our breeze blocks says something about us. It says nothing about Him.
