Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 6 of 111

Al-Isra 17:6

“Then We gave back to you a return victory over them. And We reinforced you with wealth and sons and made you more numerous in manpower.”

Essence

After the ruin comes the comeback, and every part of it is His gift: the turn, the wealth, the children, the people who answer.

A reflection

Three verbs, one Subject

The ayah before this one ended with an enemy army searching through the houses (17:5). Then the story turns, and every verb in this ayah has the same subject. Radadnā: We gave back. Amdadnākum: We reinforced you. Jaʿalnākum: We made you. A people recovered, rebuilt and multiplied. Yet the sentence never once makes them the doer of their own comeback.

A restaurant owner closes in a bad year and reopens three years later. His post on LinkedIn reads: grit, vision, never quit. Every line begins with 'I'. The cousin who lent the deposit is not in it. Nor is his wife's second job, or the night he could not sleep and asked Allah for a way out.

The ego loves a comeback story more than any other. A comeback feels earned twice: once in the fall, once in the climb. That is exactly the story this ayah declines to tell. It does not deny effort. The sources say the turn came when the people repented and returned to obedience. But the turn itself, the wealth, the children and the numbers are written as gifts.

Someone may ask whether this is vanity on God's part. Why insist on the credit? A creature who claims credit wants something from the claim: applause, standing, a better rate next time. Allah wants nothing. 'O people, you are the ones in need of Allah, and Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy' (35:15). He loses nothing if we write ourselves into the story.

The insistence is for us. A man who believes he made his own comeback will believe he can keep it by himself. The next ayah warns where that pride leads. So the humbling here is a protection. When your own turn comes back, say the three verbs as they are written. He gave back. He reinforced. He made. Then the story stays true, and the gift stays safe.
