Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 7 of 111

Al-Isra 17:7

“[And said], "If you do good, you do good for yourselves; and if you do evil, [you do it] to them [i.e., yourselves]." Then when the final [i.e., second] promise came, [We sent your enemies] to sadden your faces and to enter the masjid [i.e., the temple in Jerusalem], as they entered it the first time, and to destroy what they had taken over with [total] destruction.”

Essence

Every beauty you do lands first on you, and every ugliness comes home to you; even a sacred place cannot shield a people from that.

A reflection

The first person your good reaches

A fifteen-year-old learns sign language so she can talk to the deaf boy who waits at her bus stop. Nobody asks her to. Ten years later it is the line on her CV that gets her a job. But that is the smallest return. The bigger one is who she became in those years: a person who notices the one left out of the conversation.

The ayah says it in three words, and repeats the verb to make sure. In aḥsantum aḥsantum li-anfusikum: if you do good, you have done good to yourselves. Not to Allah first. Not even to the other person first. To you.

One modern commentary spells out the reason. Allah is free of need of your deeds. Your good does not benefit Him, and your wrong does not harm Him. Sahih Muslim records a hadith in which Allah says: My servants, you can never reach the point of harming Me, nor of benefiting Me. It is only your deeds, which I count for you and then repay you in full. Whoever finds good, let him praise Allah.

A saying is attributed to ʿAlī: 'I have never done good to anyone, nor harm to anyone'. Then he recited this ayah. He was not being modest. He was being exact. Every kindness he gave had landed, first and finally, on himself.

This changes what worship is. It is not a fee paid to a God who needs it. It is reverence for His command and compassion for His creation, and both make the doer more beautiful. Many people today work hard and still feel hollow, waiting for a thanks that never quite arrives. The ayah removes the waiting. The return began the moment you acted.

So do the good thing today that nobody will see. Not because no one is watching, but because the first person it will change is already there.
