Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 74 of 111
Al-Isra 17:74
وَلَوْلَآ أَن ثَبَّتْنَـٰكَ لَقَدْ كِدتَّ تَرْكَنُ إِلَيْهِمْ شَيْـًٔا قَلِيلًا
“And if We had not strengthened you, you would have almost inclined to them a little.”

Essence
Even the firmest heart stood because Allah made it firm; without that, the Prophet ﷺ would have come near to leaning, a little.
A reflection
Firm because He made him firm
The verb belongs to Allah: thabbatnāka, We made you firm. Not 'you stood firm'. The steadiness of the steadiest man who ever lived is credited to Someone else.
The root pictures a man in battle who does not give ground: feet planted, staying where he stands. That was the Prophet ﷺ in Makka, under years of pressure. And the ayah says, gently and plainly, that the planting was Allah's.
One classical theologian drew the conclusion that follows. The Prophet ﷺ was stronger in religion and clearer in certainty than anyone. If even he was kept only by Allah's help, everyone else needs that help more.
That is a direct blow to a quiet kind of pride. It is the pride of the person who has not fallen and assumes it was character. I would never take a bribe. I could never leave the faith. I am not the type. Perhaps. But the ayah teaches a different sentence: Allah has kept me, so far.
Picture a climber in a pub, telling the story of the day's route. He did not slip once, he says. His belayer sits across the table and smiles. Twice on the hardest stretch she took his weight on the rope, a small tightening he barely felt. The climber is not lying. He simply never saw what held him.
Someone may ask why Allah tells His Messenger this at all. Is it to keep him small, to make sure he never forgets who is in charge? The reminder protects; it does not belittle. The one danger that topples the firm is believing their firmness is their own. And Allah gains nothing from being credited. He is free of all need (35:15).
So say it, especially on the days you feel strong. My steadiness is from You. Keep me firm, and do not leave me to myself.
