Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 75 of 111

Al-Isra 17:75

“Then [if you had], We would have made you taste double [punishment in] life and double [after] death. Then you would not find for yourself against Us a helper.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Had he leaned even a little, he would have tasted double in life and in death, with no helper to stand with him against Allah.

A reflection

Some courts no helper can enter

A man's son is arrested on holiday abroad. He phones everyone he knows: a solicitor, a cousin with contacts, an old school friend who works for the government. The consular officer who rings back is kind and very clear. 'We can visit him. We can give you a list of local lawyers. We cannot intervene in their courts.'

Every helper has a border. This ayah names the one court with no consulate at all. Thumma lā tajidu laka ʿalaynā naṣīrā: then you would find no helper for yourself against Us.

The root of naṣīr carries a picture the first hearers knew well. The Arabs said rain naṣarat the land: it came to the dry ground and helped it grow. Streams running from far off into a valley, swelling its flood, were called nawāṣir, helpers. Help, in this word, is good that arrives from outside you. Now ask where every rain and every stream comes from. To look for help against Allah is to ask the rain to fall against the One who sends it.

Notice who is being addressed. Not a tyrant or a mocker, but the Messenger ﷺ himself, the most honoured of creation. If even he would have no one to stand with him against his Lord, what becomes of our pride? Our connections, our family name, our good record? The ego likes to keep a list of people who would speak for it. This ayah folds the list away.

Is it arrogant for God to speak like this to His most faithful servant? Read the sentence before it: 'Had We not made you firm' (17:74). The warning is spoken from inside a protection. The One who says 'no helper against Us' is the One who was already helping. One commentator explains the helper here as someone who would rescue him from what reached him from Us. No such rescuer exists, and none is needed. 'Your Lord does not wrong anyone' (18:49).

So the humbling and the comfort sit in the same sentence. No helper against Him. Every helper, from Him.
