Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 82 of 111
Al-Isra 17:82
“And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The words that heal a believing heart deepen the loss of one that refuses them: the Quran is a cure, never neutral.
A reflection
A cure you could not have written
Walk into any large bookshop and find the self-help shelves. Forty titles, each promising you can fix yourself: your habits, your anxiety, your confidence, your whole life, in thirty days. The face on the cover is nearly always the author's.
This ayah begins somewhere else entirely. Wa-nunazzilu: and We send down. The cure does not rise from inside the patient. It comes down from above, from the One who made the patient. That is humbling for the ego, which would much prefer to be its own physician.
The verb is in the present tense. One commentary draws out what that means. The Quran came down in stages, healing after healing, and each part was a cure for a particular illness. As the illness renewed, so did the cure. The sending down is not a single delivery long ago. It is a dose that keeps arriving.
One classical scholar is blunt about its reach. Allah never sent down from heaven a cure more general, more beneficial or more effective against illness than the Quran. How could illnesses resist, he asks, the speech of the Lord of earth and heaven? Had it come down upon mountains, it would have split them.
Someone may object. Why would God praise His own Book? Is that not self-promotion? Think of the label on a medicine bottle. It says what the medicine does, how to take it and who it is for. Nobody calls the label boastful. Without it, the patient would leave the bottle on the shelf.
Allah gains nothing from our reading. He is free of all need (35:15). The description is for our sake. It tells a sick heart that what it needs is already in the house.
The pride that wants to fix itself alone is the first symptom the Quran treats. Healing begins the moment we admit we did not write the prescription.
