Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 95 of 111
Al-Isra 17:95
“Say, "If there were upon the earth angels walking securely,[774] We would have sent down to them from the heaven an angel [as a] messenger."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Had angels lived settled on the earth, an angel would have come down to them; to people who walk, Allah sends a messenger who walks.
A reflection
Walking, not flying
Look closely at the two words this ayah chooses for its imagined angels. They are not flying. They are yamshūna, walking, and muṭmaʾinnīn, settled.
Two commentaries explain why both words matter. These angels walk on their feet as people do. They do not rise on their wings to the sky, to listen to its inhabitants and learn what they need to know. Another commentary adds that they live in the earth as residents, staying put. Angels like that, cut off from heaven, would need what humans need: a messenger sent down to them, of their own kind.
The root of muṭmaʾinn carries a settled picture, and the lexicons state it plainly. Ṭumaʾnīna is stillness after disturbance. Ground that sank low was said to have done it. One lexicon records a man who stayed in a place and took it as his home. An early grammarian, quoted in the lexicons, explains this very ayah: settled in the earth as a homeland.
So the condition for needing a messenger is not being human. It is being earth-bound. Anyone who lives down here, unable to climb up and hear for himself, needs the news brought down.
Think of a crew on an oil platform far out at sea, in a storm that has grounded the helicopters for nine days. Nobody can go ashore to ask how their families are. Everything they know arrives over one radio, in the voice of the one shore officer they have come to trust.
That is our condition. We walk. We cannot fly up and listen at the door of the unseen. Whatever we know of Allah's will, beyond what reason can reach, has to come down to us. The ayah does not mock that need. It honours it, by fitting the messenger to the people who are waiting for him.
