Al-An'am 6:9

وَلَوْ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ مَلَكًا لَّجَعَلْنَـٰهُ رَجُلًا وَلَلَبَسْنَا عَلَيْهِم مَّا يَلْبِسُونَ

“And if We had made him [i.e., the messenger] an angel, We would have made him [appear as] a man, and We would have covered them with that in which they cover themselves [i.e., confusion and doubt].”

Essence

Even an angel would have come as a man, and they would have wrapped him in the same doubt they had already woven.

A reflection

An objection that rebuilds itself

A seventeen-year-old waves away his mother's advice about money. 'You've never had any,' he says. 'I'll listen to someone who's actually made it.' So his uncle, who built a business from nothing, sits him down. Twenty minutes in, the boy shrugs. 'Easy for you to say. You're rich.' The adviser changed completely. The objection survived untouched, because it was never really about the adviser.

This ayah describes the same loop. The deniers said the messenger should have been an angel. The answer: had We made him an angel, We would have made him a man. People cannot look at an angel in his true form, so he would have come in human shape. Several early authorities say exactly this.

Then the trap closes. The commentaries spell out what they would have said to an angel in human form. They would have called him only a man. If he brought a miracle to show he was an angel, they would deny it, as they denied Muhammad ﷺ. The demand would have reproduced itself, one level up.

That is how you recognise an objection that is not really a question. Answer it, and it rebuilds itself somewhere else. The person asking never gets closer. The goalposts walk with them.

The same pattern turns up in quieter forms. 'I'd believe if clever people believed.' Many do. 'Well, they were raised that way.' 'I'd pray if I felt something.' Feeling often follows practice. 'Then it's just habit.' Each answer gives birth to the next objection.

The ayah does not sneer at the question. It shows its shape. For anyone who keeps finding new reasons not to begin, there is an honest test. Ask yourself what answer would actually move you. If none would, the problem is not the evidence. It is the wish not to be moved.
