Al-Kahf 18:1

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنزَلَ عَلَىٰ عَبْدِهِ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَلَمْ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عِوَجَا ۜ

“[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, who has sent down upon His Servant [Muḥammad (ﷺ)] the Book and has not made therein any deviance.[779]”

Essence

The surah that answers a trap opens not with the answer but with praise, and with one claim: nothing in this Book is bent.

A reflection

Praise arrives before the answer does

Fifteen nights had passed in silence. Quraysh had been handed three questions designed to expose him, and he had promised an answer by the next day. Nothing came. Makkah filled with the news that the man had failed his own test. Then the surah arrived, and its opening words are not the answer. They are praise.

Praise for what? For a Book, and for the fact that there is nothing crooked in it. A reply to public humiliation begins by thanking the One who sent the very thing being mocked.

Notice who is doing the praising. He praises Himself. In a creature that would be vanity, and we spot it at once. Think of a stoneyard where the donor's name is cut twice the height of the inscription it introduces, and the letter-cutter no longer asks why. Vanity needs the praise precisely because it is not yet true. It has to be installed. He does not need it, because in His case it is only a description.

There is something further in the grammar. The words are a noun and not a verb, so the praise is stated as settled rather than performed. It was not switched on because something had gone well. It was already the case across those fifteen silent nights, when by every visible measure nothing had gone well at all.

That is where pride loses its footing. We praise once the results are in. He is praised before they are.
