Al-Kahf 18:100
وَعَرَضْنَا جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ عَرْضًا
“And We will present Hell that Day to the disbelievers, on display -”
Saheeh International
Essence
The root of displayed is a stick laid across the mouth of a vessel: something set crosswise so nothing gets past it.
A reflection
Set crosswise, so there is no way round
The verb and its object come from the same root, said twice. We displayed it a displaying.
And the root has a picture the lexicons go straight to. A stick laid across the mouth of a vessel: something set crosswise that blocks the way.
From the same letters come width, a thing's broad side, and anything presented or offered up.
So the display is not a viewing. It is something put across a path.
A linguistic commentary reads the force of the doubled word as a display terrible beyond measure. It was set, it says, where they would see it and hear its raging.
A narration-based commentary adds the purpose, and it is stated plainly. He brings it out and makes it appear, so that they see the punishment in it before they enter. The grief and distress reach them sooner.
Notice what that implies about the speaker. The sentence has no mechanism in it. No gates, no guards, no summons. Hell is simply presented, because the One speaking arranges the order of what is shown and when.
And this is where the ordinary self-image of a modern person quietly fails.
We live with an assumption of manageable exposure. You can leave a conversation, close a tab, decline a meeting, walk out of a room. The whole texture of a day is made of small exits.
The pride in that is not loud. It is simply the settled sense that one is never cornered.
The verse removes every exit in one verb. A thing laid crosswise, in front of people who spent a lifetime arranging not to look at it.
And it is worth saying what this is not. It is not an invitation to despair. The One who can set a thing across a path is the same One who is asked and who answers. He is nearer than the asking.
The display is in the future. The asking is available this afternoon.
