Al-Kahf 18:64

قَالَ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنَّا نَبْغِ ۚ فَٱرْتَدَّا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَارِهِمَا قَصَصًا

“[Moses] said, "That is what we were seeking." So they returned, following their footprints.”

Essence

In Arabic, tracking footprints and telling a story are the same root, which is why going back is how this journey arrives.

A reflection

Going back is not the detour, it is the method

The ordinary reading treats this as the correction of a mistake. They overshot, so they had to walk back. A tidy detail of plot.

But look at what the whole errand consisted of.

He was never told to go to a place. He was told to watch for a loss, and the loss had already happened at a rock he walked past without noticing. From the moment the fish left the basket, every step forward was a step away.

So retracing is not the penalty for the error. It is the only shape the arrival could ever have taken.

Nobody reaches the junction of the two seas by pressing on.

A knitter who finds a dropped stitch six rows down does not carry on and hope. She tinks back, stitch by stitch, unmaking six rows of work she was pleased with, to a point she has already been. The six rows were not wasted. They were how the fault was found.

This is worth saying plainly, because almost every instinct in a capable person resists it. Going back feels like losing ground, and losing ground feels like failure. So we add, we extend, we compensate, we build on top.

And the one thing the verse models is the opposite. A single sentence of recognition, and then a turn.

There is one more thing the tidy reading misses. He does not say: we must go back. He says: that is what we were seeking.

The loss is identified as the thing found. The fish going was not the problem to be fixed on the way to the goal. It was the goal, reported late.
