Yusuf 12:3

“We relate to you, [O Muḥammad], the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Qur’ān although you were, before it, among the unaware.”

Essence

Every character in this story thinks he is writing it; the ayah names the only One who is, and calls His telling the best.

A reflection

We are the ones telling it

The ayah opens with a word it did not need. Arabic can say 'We narrate' with the verb alone. Here the pronoun stands in front, naḥnu, so the sentence reads: We are the ones who narrate.

Now watch the story it introduces. Almost everyone in it believes he is writing it. The brothers plan a disappearance and a tidy repentance afterwards. A woman plans a seduction and then a prison sentence. Officials plan, merchants plan, a king plans for a famine. Every one of them is sure he holds the pen. And the plan of the brothers, kill him or cast him away, becomes the road to the throne they will one day bow before.

The commentaries draw the lesson without softening it. No one can push back what Allah decrees. If He decrees good and honour for a person, the whole world could gather to stop it and fail.

That is where the ego loses its favourite position. Each of us narrates our own life as the hero. Three grown siblings at an Eid lunch tell the story of the night the shop flooded. In each version the teller was the calm one who saved the stock. They laugh, and each of them privately believes his own account.

The ayah does not argue with that pride. It simply relocates the narrator. You are in the story. You are not telling it.

Is it vanity to call one's own telling the best? In a creature it would be, because our praise of ourselves is a bid for something we lack. He lacks nothing, and the benefit runs all one way: the hearer gets the best story. It is the arrogant who need to be the narrator. The humble can rest in being narrated.
