Al-Kahf · Makki · ayah 7 of 110
Al-Kahf 18:7
إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ زِينَةً لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا
“Indeed, We have made that which is on the earth adornment for it that We may test them [as to] which of them is best in deed.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Everything on the earth is called jewellery for the earth, and the reason given for the beauty is a test about who does best.
A reflection
Jewellery for the earth, not for you
Read the pronoun carefully. What is on the earth is an adornment for the earth. Not for us. The feminine suffix points back to the ground.
One of the commentaries raises the obvious objection. Surely the ornaments are really for the people, since the earth cannot see itself. The answer given is sharper than the objection. A human being has two sides. By one he stands under the test. By the other he is part of the decoration. And the surah itself will say so later, in plain words: wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world (18:46).
So the career, the house, the family you are proud of, your own face: the ayah has filed them as the ground's jewellery.
Stand in a natural history museum in front of a diorama. A hare in winter coat, mid-turn, ears back, standing in false snow with a painted ridge behind it. Everything about the arrangement exists to be looked at. The animal was once the one doing the looking, and now it is part of the display. It cannot see the scene it completes.
That is the shift the ayah makes, and the ego loses its footing on it. We assume we are the audience, and that the world is laid out for our appraisal. Pride is simply the habit of standing where the audience stands.
The only one looking is the One who dressed the ground.
