Al-Kahf 18:75

۞ قَالَ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكَ إِنَّكَ لَن تَسْتَطِيعَ مَعِىَ صَبْرًا

“[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"”

Essence

One word has been added to the sentence he said before, and the commentaries say that word is the whole of the rebuke.

A reflection

Two letters of escalation

Readers slide over this verse because they have just read it. That is the point of it.

Put the two side by side. After the boat: did I not say that you would not be able to have patience with me. After the boy: did I not say to you that you would not be able to have patience with me.

One word has been added. To you.

The commentaries noticed. One says this word strengthens the reproach. Another records a remark that this second time was harder than the first, precisely because of that addition.

So the whole escalation, across two episodes and a death, is a single pronoun.

That is a discipline almost nobody has. The second time somebody does the thing you warned them about, the sentence available to you has grown enormously. There is now a pattern, a precedent, a record.

And the temptation is not to shout. It is to generalise. You always. Every time. This is what you do.

A chairman who begins a sentence with we and finishes it with you has made the same move. Everybody in the room hears it. Nothing was raised. One pronoun changed and the temperature went with it.

The first version was a description of a situation. The second version has a person in it.

So the escalation here is real, and it is proportionate, and it is two letters long.

Which leaves a question for anybody who has to correct somebody twice. What would your second sentence be, if you were only allowed to add one word to the first.
