Al-Kahf 18:81
فَأَرَدْنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَهُمَا رَبُّهُمَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهُ زَكَوٰةً وَأَقْرَبَ رُحْمًا
“So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Nearer in mercy uses the word for the last night's march, when thirsty camels stop grazing because the water is close.
A reflection
The replacement is not his to make
Notice who does the replacing in this sentence.
Not the man explaining. He says only that this was intended. The verb for the replacing belongs to somebody else: their Lord.
And the possessive is doing work. Not the Lord. Their Lord.
So the sentence has two parties in it, and the one who acted at the roadside is not the one who supplies what comes next.
That is the exact edge of human capacity, and the ego does not like being shown it. A person can take a thing away. Removing is within reach of almost anybody, and it is the one power that needs no gift behind it.
Putting something in its place is a different order of act entirely.
A grower who loses a thirty-year-old tree in a gale can plant another the same week. He cannot replace the tree. He can start one, and he will not see what he started.
So pride about what you can do collapses on a simple asymmetry. The removing took a night and a wind. The replacing takes thirty years and is not in your hands.
And there is a mercy inside the grammar that is easy to miss. The verse does not say that a replacement happened. It says that the replacement was intended.
So even the intention is reported as somebody else's.
Three people are described in the sentence, and the parents are the only ones who receive. They did not ask. They were not told. And what they were given, by the wording, came from the one they already belonged to.
