Al-Kahf 18:88
“But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of the best [i.e., Paradise], and we [i.e., Dhul-Qarnayn] will speak to him from our command with ease."”

Essence
The conqueror names the believer's real pay and it is not his to give, so all he offers is a lighter load.
A reflection
The reward he names is not his
A man with every means on earth is deciding what a believer gets. The first thing he says is about something he does not control.
He will have a reward of the best. A narration-based commentary explains it as the Garden, with Allah, in the next life.
So the most powerful figure in the chapter, standing over a people he could do anything to, opens by pointing away from himself.
That is not modesty. It is accuracy. He had no Garden to hand out.
And this is where the ordinary picture of worship gets corrected. Worship is widely felt as a transaction with a watching authority: you perform, something is released. The verse quietly removes the middleman and leaves the account open between the servant and Allah.
Which is the only reason worship can be for the one who does it.
Nobody is collecting from you. Allah says plainly elsewhere that He has no need of the worlds, and that whoever is grateful is grateful for his own soul. The prayer does not arrive anywhere as revenue.
A woman learns Braille so that she can transcribe books for a lending library. It takes her two years and she is slow at it for the first one. She did it for the readers.
What she will tell you, if you ask, is that she now reads differently herself. Her own reading has gone slower and gone deeper, because she spent two years feeling language letter by letter.
She did not set out to receive that. It is not a payment. It is what happens to a person who does the work.
And that is the shape of this clause. The believer is told the Best is his, from Allah, elsewhere. What the man in front of him can offer is only the next half of the verse.
Everything that mattered was already settled between the servant and his Lord before the conqueror opened his mouth.
