Al-Kahf 18:90

“Until, when he came to the rising of the sun [i.e., the east], he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield.”

Essence

The same We that gave him a way to everything says, of these people, that it made them no screen at all.

A reflection

One We, two sentences, two worlds

Put two sentences from this passage side by side. They have the same speaker.

We established him upon the earth, and We gave him from everything a way.

And: We had not made for them, against it, any screen.

Six verses apart. The same first person. One man handed every means there is, and a people handed not so much as a roof.

Notice that the verse does not say they had no shelter. It says We did not make them one. The absence is not an accident of geography that Allah is reporting. It is stated as His own arrangement.

A boatbuilder fits out one hull with a wheelhouse, a stove and a deck, and finishes another as an open shell. Both leave the same yard. Both were built on purpose.

The first skipper does not need to be told this. He simply never thinks about the deck under his feet.

And that is where a particular pride dies quietly. Almost nobody is arrogant about their achievements in the open. The arrogance lives one level down, in the unexamined sense that one's circumstances are the normal ones.

That the roof is standard. That the language, the schooling, the water in the tap, the body that holds, are the baseline from which some people have unfortunately fallen.

They are not the baseline. They are a wheelhouse, fitted.

The verse makes the comparison deliberately and puts the richest man in the chapter in front of the poorest people in it. He has no instruction here, no choice to make, no decision recorded. He is simply walked past them and made to look.

Which is the only honest posture available to anybody who has been given more than the person in front of them.

Not guilt. Not a theory about why. Just the plain recognition that two sentences in the same voice set the terms, and that you did not write either one.
