Al-Kahf 18:96

“Bring me bars of iron" - until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, "Blow [with bellows]," until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, "Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper."”

Essence

Three instructions, each one word long, and the longest description of making anything in the Qur'an.

A reflection

Course, fire, pour, repeat

This is the most detailed account of a piece of work anywhere in the Qur'an, and the detail is the method.

A legal commentary sets out the sequence. He would order a course of blocks and stones laid. Then wood and charcoal were fired under it with bellows until the iron glowed. Then molten copper was poured over the course.

When it had fused and set and bonded, he began again with the next course, until the whole came level and became a solid mountain.

So there was no single heroic act. There was one operation repeated, in order, without variation.

And the verse's own structure mirrors it. Bring me. Until, when he had levelled. Blow. Until, when he had made it fire. Bring me.

Two waiting clauses, both opening with until, when. The Arabic makes you stand there while the course heats.

A lead worker on a roof will not pour a joint until the old lead in the pot is running clean. There is no way to hurry that and no way to tell from the outside whether he has. A joint poured early looks identical for about four winters.

Which is the whole problem with sequence work. The step you skip is invisible, and the failure arrives long after the man who skipped it.

The account gives the strongest man in the chapter no shortcut. Not one. He is given a way to everything, and what the way turns out to consist of is lay, heat, pour, wait, lay again.

And there is an honest consolation in that for anybody facing something large. The barrier that neither climbing nor boring could get through was made of one small operation, done properly, many times.

Nothing in the verse happens quickly.
