Al-Kahf 18:95

قَالَ مَا مَكَّنِّى فِيهِ رَبِّى خَيْرٌ فَأَعِينُونِى بِقُوَّةٍ أَجْعَلْ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُمْ رَدْمًا

“He said, "That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength [i.e., manpower]; I will make between you and them a dam.”

Essence

Offered a fee, he repeats the verb Allah used of him eleven verses earlier and hands the credit back in the same breath.

A reflection

He quoted the verse about himself and named the giver

Eleven verses earlier the account opened with a sentence about him. We established him upon the earth.

Here he uses the same verb, in the first person, and puts a name on it. What my Lord has established me in is better.

That is the hinge of the whole passage.

He could have said: I have no need of your money. He could have said: my treasury is larger than your village. Both would have been true and neither would have cost him anything.

What he says instead is that the capital is not his.

A narration-based commentary reads the sentence with care, and says he spoke it out of chastity, religion, soundness and an aim at good. It then sets it beside a prophet in another chapter who was offered a gift. His answer: what Allah has given me is better than what He has given you.

Two kings, two refusals, the same reasoning.

A man restoring a church organ will not take the fee the committee has voted him. His reason is not modesty and he says it plainly. The pipes were given by the same families, four generations back, and he learnt the trade in the loft.

He is not working for free. He is declining to be paid twice.

And this is exactly where a quiet vanity in capable people is exposed. We are careful not to boast about outcomes. We are far less careful about the silent assumption underneath: that the capacity itself is ours.

It is not pride to be good at something. The pride is in forgetting where the something came from, and then charging for it as though it were stock you had bought.

He had the largest holdings in the chapter. He had a people in front of him offering to pay, which would have been lawful, ordinary and unremarkable.

And at the first opportunity to take credit, he put the word my Lord into the sentence.
