Maryam · Makki · ayah 27 of 98
Maryam 19:27
فَأَتَتْ بِهِۦ قَوْمَهَا تَحْمِلُهُۥ ۖ قَالُوا۟ يَـٰمَرْيَمُ لَقَدْ جِئْتِ شَيْـًٔا فَرِيًّا
“Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.”

Essence
She walked back into her town carrying the very thing that accused her, and her people named it with a word that cuts both ways.
A reflection
Not a mob: a family in tears
The scene most people picture is a crowd. Raised voices, pointing fingers, perhaps stones in hand. One report in the commentaries does say some meant to stone her until the child spoke. But that is not where the commentaries begin.
Several describe something quieter, and harder. When she came in with the child, her people wept. They grieved, because they were a household known for goodness. One account says they cried first, and then said what this ayah records. Another says that, shaken, they began to lower their voices with her and speak gently.
That changes how the ayah sounds. 'You have come with a thing unheard of' is not only the verdict of strangers. It is the cry of people who loved her and expected the world of her. The next ayah makes the expectation explicit, reaching for her father, her mother and a righteous name.
Accusation from enemies wounds, but it is easy to discount. Accusation from people who wept for you is another matter. They are not lying about what they see. They see a girl they trusted, holding a baby, with no husband. Everything they know points one way.
Now hear the scene as its first audience heard it, in Makka, where the surah came down. The listeners have just been told she was fed by a stream and a palm. They know what her people do not. That is the strange place the ayah puts every hearer. We stand in the room with the accusers, knowing they are wrong, unable to say so.
And in the middle of the room, in her arms, is the one who can.
