Maryam 19:28
يَـٰٓأُخْتَ هَـٰرُونَ مَا كَانَ أَبُوكِ ٱمْرَأَ سَوْءٍ وَمَا كَانَتْ أُمُّكِ بَغِيًّا
“O sister [i.e., descendant] of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Her people build their rebuke out of her own family, and every word of it is truer than they know.
A reflection
The 'mistake' that was answered in the Prophet's lifetime
Many readers pass over 'O sister of Harun' without a pause. Others have met it as the Qur'an's most quoted 'error'. The charge runs like this: Harun, brother of Musa, lived many centuries before Maryam. So the Qur'an must have confused the mother of Isa with Miriam, the sister of Musa and Harun.
The objection is not new, and it was not raised by modern scholarship. It was put to a Companion in the Prophet's own lifetime. Sahih Muslim records that al-Mughira ibn Shuʿba was sent to Najran, a Christian town in the south. Its people asked him: you recite 'O sister of Harun', yet Musa came long before Isa. He returned to the Prophet ﷺ and asked. The answer was one sentence. They used to name themselves after their prophets and the righteous who came before them.
That is a naming custom, and it is familiar. Families still name sons after a revered ancestor or a prophet. A girl called after a great-aunt is not mistaken for her.
The Qur'an's own internal timeline points the same way. It says Isa was sent after the messengers who followed Musa, and it places Dawud after Musa. One classical commentator uses exactly that to dismiss the confusion as a plain slip by those who proposed it. The Qur'an knew the order of its prophets.
What remains open is which Harun is meant. The commentaries offer several readings: a righteous man of her own time, a brother of hers, or Harun the prophet as her ancestor. One major commentator chooses whatever matches the Prophet's explanation: that she was linked to a man of her own people. The confusion the sceptic alleges is the one reading the tradition actually rejected.
