Maryam 19:3

إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ نِدَآءً خَفِيًّا

“When he called to his Lord a private call [i.e., supplication].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Zakariya called out to his Lord with everything he had, in a place where no one but his Lord could hear.

A reflection

A quiet prayer, or a hidden shout?

Most readers take this ayah as a detail of volume. Zakariya prayed quietly. It becomes a small point of manners: keep your voice down when you make duʿāʾ.

The two key words do not sit together that comfortably. The first is a call. Its root, in the lexicons, is a voice raised so that it carries across the camp, and the circle of people such a voice gathers. It is not murmuring. It is calling out.

The second word is hidden. Its root gives the lexicons one of their loveliest images. The small feathers tucked beneath a bird's great flight feathers are named from it, because they disappear whenever the bird folds its wing.

So the ayah does not say he prayed softly. It says he called out, and the calling was hidden. One classical commentary makes the distinction exactly. Hiddenness is not the same as faintness. Whoever raises his voice in a place where no one can see or hear him has hidden it.

The commentaries fill in the place. In his sanctuary. In the depth of the night. Hidden from his people. An old man, alone, calling to his Lord with whatever voice he had left.

That changes the picture. This is not a polite request delivered at low volume. It is the cry of someone at the end of his strength, put where only one Listener was present.

Hold the bird's wing in mind. The hidden feathers are not decoration. They are part of the wing that flies. Folded, nobody sees them. Spread, they lift the bird.

That is the prayer this ayah describes. Fully a call, fully hidden, and fully part of what lifted him.
