Maryam · Makki · ayah 37 of 98
Maryam 19:37
“Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day.”
Saheeh International
Essence
The clearest sentence about Isa split people into factions, and the ayah sends their dispute forward to a Day when every witness will be present.
A reflection
When clarity produces division
We tend to assume that people disagree because a message was unclear. Explain it plainly enough, the thinking goes, and agreement will follow.
This ayah overturns that. It comes directly after the plainest sentence in the passage: Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. And it opens with fa, 'so' or 'then'. Then the factions differed. One commentary draws out the force of that letter. It points to how badly they acted. They took what should have produced agreement, and made it the source of disagreement. Isa's words were decisive statements that he was the servant of Allah and His messenger. Out of them came opposite errors, one side going too far and the other falling short.
Picture three brothers in a hospital corridor after a surgeon's short, careful sentence. The operation went well, she said, but the next forty-eight hours matter. Ten minutes later one brother is phoning relatives with good news. The second is already grieving. The third has heard only that he needs to cancel his trip. One clear sentence; three factions.
The ayah does not blame the sentence. It blames what people brought to it.
Now hear it as the first audience might. One early scholar read al-aḥzāb, the factions, as all those who banded together against the prophets. On that reading, the Makkans hearing this surah were not only told about factions. They were among them.
That is the uncomfortable mirror. A reader can study this ayah as a history of other people's quarrels. Or they can ask what they have done with the clearest things they were ever told.
