Maryam 19:63

تِلْكَ ٱلْجَنَّةُ ٱلَّتِى نُورِثُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا مَن كَانَ تَقِيًّا

“That is Paradise, which We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who were fearing of Allāh.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The Garden is not paid out like wages but handed down as an inheritance, which can never be revoked, to whoever walked with care.

A reflection

Not wages, an inheritance

Many believers carry an unspoken accounting model of Paradise. Deeds go in, reward comes out. Pray enough, give enough, avoid enough, and the payment is earned. It is a model that breeds anxiety in the conscientious and arrogance in the confident.

The ayah chooses a different verb. Nūrithu: We give as inheritance. The commentaries stop at the choice, and explain it in several ways.

One commentary asks why inheritance was chosen over every other word for transferring ownership, such as sale or gift. Because, it answers, inheritance is the most complete kind of ownership there is. A sale can be undone. A gift can be taken back. An inheritance is never followed by cancellation, reclaiming or annulment. Whatever the Garden is, once given, it is not going to be recalled.

Another commentary gives a second reason. The people of mindfulness meet their Lord when their deeds are over. The work has finished, but its fruit remains, and the fruit is the Garden. So when He admits them, He makes them inherit from their own mindfulness, the way an heir inherits from someone who has died. The person they used to be does the work; the person they become receives what it left.

That is a remarkable reframing. The deeds were never wages. They were more like a life spent building a house one would not see finished, and then being told the house is yours.

The root agrees. One lexicon says inheritance passes from one party to another without any contract. No haggling, no invoice, no negotiation.

So the anxious believer can stop treating each deed as a payment that might bounce. And the confident one can stop imagining that the Garden was bought. It is a bequest. It comes from the One who owns everything, and He has decided to leave it to the mindful.
